I’m totally new to this blogging business, which wasn’t even invented when I still worked in the advertising industry. I have to confess that when I agreed to write the occasional post for the Singing Entrepreneur, I didn’t have time to go and do my research first into what constitutes a good blog. I thought I would just write a bit every now and then.

However, as every performer knows, external feedback plays a key function in improving what we do, particularly if offered by someone who knows what they’re talking about. I received some very useful comments from just such a person today about how to tread the line in my blog between talking about what I am doing, which is often interesting and relevant to the aims of the Singing Entrepreneur, and straightforward self-advertising, which is not only boring but has its own separate place in my bi-monthly newsletter and the pages of my websites.

The take-home message from our conversation was “I respectfully suggest that you take that post down and try re-writing it in the following way, for the following reasons…”.

I think he’s right, so I will. When One Becomes Three, Mark II coming soon. I’m leaving the other version up so that you can compare them and please feel free to comment on whether you think the new one is indeed better. This is a useful exercise for me as a blogging neophyte and also speaks to how we can use the many different media available to us (Facebook, Twitter, email, Mailchimp, YouTube etc)  to communicate different but complimentary professional messages. These media function in different ways and we need to learn how to tweak our communication to suit each one.

Thinking about some of the feedback I have received over the years as a singer, I can’t help thinking that if much of it had been half as sincerely offered and genuinely constructive, I could have saved myself a lot of bother.
