The Forum 2012

Redefining Success

What does it mean to be successful in the classical music industry today?

Is the industry out of step with the realities of life as a professional singer in the 21st century?

Does the training still meet the needs of a rapidly changing world?

Do the managers, agents and professional intermediaries continue to serve our careers in the way they should?

The Singing Entrepreneur Forum is a two day event for singers and people working within the classical singing industry. We aim to find some answers to these questions by creating a space for discussion. Our hope is that we find new ways to move forward together as a community, redefining our definitions of success and engaging fully with the world around us. Join us in August to add your voice.

The Singing Entrepreneur Forum is being hosted by Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival 2012 at Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, London. For over 3 weeks Tête à Tête brings together national companies, individual artists and audiences to explore not what is, but what might be the future of opera. The Opera Festival will be providing musical entertainment throughout the Forum, with an opportunity to see the main house production on Friday night.

Day 1: Friday 3rd August 2012

Inspiration

The first day of the Forum is dedicated to Singers. We have brought together 16 incredible speakers to share their experiences of thriving today in the classical singing industry. Each speaker is a Singing Entrepreneur – a working professional singer representing the many different ways of defining success within a 21st century context. They are business people, teachers, educators, recording artists, students, activists and international stars, each with an incredible personal story to tell. Some you will know, others you may not have heard of; some you may have admired from afar, others may be stars of the future; but each is an inspiration who we hope will encourage you to explore your own career in ways you never before expected.

The day will be divided into three sections:

Identity – What makes you unique

Business – How you promote yourself to the world

Performance – The practice of the craft

There will be break out time between sessions for networking, entertainment and discussion.

The Speakers line up will be announced soon….join our Facebook Page or our Twitter feed to be amongst the first to find out who will be there.

Day 2: Saturday 4th August 2012 – Morning

Discussion – “Meet the Gatekeepers”

The morning of the second day is dedicated to Industry Leaders. Who are the people who stand at the gates of the companies and colleges we want to get into? What are the issues that they have to deal with every day? And what are they looking for in us?

“Meet the Gatekeepers” is a round table discussion with the people who are responsible for promoting and employing us, chaired by Baroness Genista “Jenny” McIntosh.

Panel members will be announced soon and will represent:

Artist Management

Artistic Direction of a touring company

Casting Director of a National House

Director of Education at a National House

Operatic Training, both institutional and professional

Attendees will have the opportunity of posing questions to the panel in a “Question Time” style debate.

Day 2: Saturday 4th August 2012 – Afternoon

Action

The afternoon of the second day is dedicated to Our Community. We will be hosting an Open Space style discussion to pick up on the issues raised throughout the Forum and to begin an action plan for how to move forward as a community. All contributions welcome and valued. This is potentially the most important part of the event and we look forward to hearing all your views.

We hope that everyone will leave the Forum with an understanding of their own value within the industry and the knowledge that every one of us is a Singing Entrepreneur

We hope to see you there!
